A preliminary survey of foliar sclerenchyma in neotropical Loranthaceae Naturalis
Kuijt, J.; Lye, D..
The foliar sclerenchyma of all genera of neotropical Loranthaceae is surveyed by means of cleared leaves, using selected species. Three general categories of sclerenchyma are recognized. Fibers may form discontinuous or continuous bundles associated with veins or, more rarely, occur as individual cells. Sclereids, often of the astrosclereid type, are present in varying concentrations, or may be absent. Cristarque cells are very common, and occasionally extremely abundant, but are lacking in several genera. The survey includes information on terminal tracheids which are almost invariably present. Attention is drawn to the systematic significance of sclerenchyma where warranted.

Byproducts of orange extraction: influence of different treatments in fiber composition and physical and chemical parameters BJPS
Andrade,Juliana Maria de Mello; Jong,Erna Vogt de; Henriques,Amélia Teresinha.
In this work we evaluated the variability in fiber content and physical and chemical parameters of byproducts from orange juice extraction. Five different treatments and two drying methods were evaluated. The results indicate that drying by lyophilization was better than that drying in an oven. The pH ranged from approximately 3.47 to 3.96. The variation in moisture values was 9.22% ± 0.02 to 18.48 ± 0.52%. The total dietary fiber content in the resulting flours ranged from 42.44% to 62.74%. The soluble and insoluble dietary fiber contents differed among the samples, ranging from 5.04% to 19.95% for the first fiber type, and 23.96% to 57.70% for the second. In conclusion, three treatments, associated with freeze-drying, showed promising results in the...

Drying kinetics of fermented grape pomace: Determination of moisture effective diffusivity AGRIAMBI
Deamici,Kricelle M.; Oliveira,Lucas C. de; Rosa,Gabriela S. da; Oliveira,Elizangela G. de.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to obtain the equilibrium moisture content of grape (variety ‘Tannat’) pomace through desorption isotherms, to evaluate the drying kinetics, determine the coefficient of effective diffusivity and physico-chemically characterize the grape pomace and the product obtained after drying. The desorption isotherms were determined at 50, 60 and 70 ºC and the experimental data were fitted using the GAB model (Gugghenheim, Anderson and de Boer). Drying was evaluated using a 22 factorial experimental design with three center points and effective diffusivity was obtained through the diffusion model of Fick’s second law. The grape pomace was characterized regarding the contents of moisture, protein, carbohydrates, lipids, ash and...

Influence of Finish Treatment on the Durability of Aramid Fibers Aged Under an Alkaline Environment ArchiMer
Derombise, Guillaume; Van Schoors, Laetitia Vouyovitch; Messou, Marie-fleur; Davies, Peter.
Aramid fibers are high-performance materials which have been used in ropes and protective clothing for many years. They are also now being proposed in geo-textiles for ground reinforcement. The influence of the surface finish composition and content has been studied in the field of cables and textiles, but there is no published data concerning the effect of a finish treatment on the hydrolytic degradation. Aramid fibers with different finish contents have been aged in an alkaline environment. The degradation has been identified by FTIR, viscosimetry, TGA, SEM, and tensile tests. For Technora fibers, the presence of finish appears to limit the tensile strength loss of aramid fibers at pH 11 by limiting abrasion, as well as bulk and surface degradation. For...

Management of the palm Astrocaryum chambira Burret (Arecaceae) in northwest Amazon Acta Botanica
García,Néstor; Galeano,Gloria; Mesa,Laura; Castaño,Nicolás; Balslev,Henrik; Bernal,Rodrigo.
We studied the management of the fiber-producing chambira palm Astrocaryum chambira by indigenous people in the Colombian Amazon. Between 2009 and 2012, we visited four communities and two marketing centers, where we interviewed 12 people. In addition, we specifically observed A. chambira harvesting, processing, and commercialization; studied palm populations at five localities; measured leaf production rate; and integrated secondary data. At least 21 aboriginal groups in the Colombian Amazon use chambira fiber. The palm grows in association with human communities, and it has been widely used and managed in past agroforestry systems. The fiber is obtained from the unexpanded leaves of juvenile or adult palms, and harvesting is often unsustainable because...

ABSTRACT The nutritional composition of silages from the millet cultivars BRS 1501, ADR 500 and ADR 8010 was evaluated with the inclusion of soy hulls at 0, 3, 6 and 10%. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 3 x 4 factorial scheme with 3 replications. The dry matter content of the silages was affected by the inclusion of the soy hulls, ranging from 16.20% (ADR 8010) to 23.27% (BRS 1501) for the inclusion of 0 and 10% respectively. The levels of crude protein ranged from 9.46 to 10.79%, with significant differences between varieties being seen with the inclusion of 6% and 10% soy hulls. Inclusion of the hulls reduced the mineral matter content of the silages, with a change of 8.62% in the control treatment, up to an average of 6.38% at the...

Peculiar anatomical traits, high durability, and potential ornamental use of Cyclanthaceae as fresh foliage Anais da ABC (AABC)
MEDINA,MARIA CAMILA; HOYOS-GÓMEZ,SAÚL E.; DEMARCO,DIEGO; TUBERQUIA,DINO.
ABSTRACT Wild plant species with potential for use as ornamental green foliage are often reported. Nevertheless, there are few studies evaluating morphological and anatomical aspects associated with this use. Preliminary trials suggest that the species of Sphaeradenia (Sander ex Mast.) Harling, a Cyclantaceae that occurs from Costa Rica to Peru, is suitable to be used as fresh foliage because of attractiveness of their leaves in vase and its durability without showing tissue damage, compared with other genera of this family. Through the study of anatomical characters, it is possible to predict the potential of a species that can serve as ornamental foliage. In this study, three foliar anatomical features (thickness of the cuticle and leaf, and percentage...
